### Surviving the Era of Mass Intelligence

When a billion people can summon a tireless, near-expert mind for the price of a coffee, the scarce resource is no longer intelligence. It is judgment. That single fact should reorganize education, work, and democracy — and almost none of our institutions are acting like it.

Here is my strong opinion: the danger of Mass Intelligence is not that machines will outthink us. It is that we will stop thinking at all. Every technology that automated a human skill — calculators, GPS, spell-check — quietly atrophied the skill it replaced. AI automates something far more fundamental: the struggle of forming a thought. Struggle is not a bug in cognition; it is how judgment is built. A generation that outsources its first drafts, its research, and its decisions will have answers without understanding, and opinions without ownership.

So how do we thrive? Three commitments, none optional.

First, defend friction. Schools should carve out AI-free zones where students must reason, write, and argue unaided — not from nostalgia, but for the same reason athletes train without the exoskeleton. The goal of education now is not producing answers; it is producing people who can tell a good answer from a confident, fluent, wrong one.

Second, demand provenance. When anyone can generate anything, trust collapses unless we can verify origin. We need mandatory labeling of synthetic media, cryptographic content credentials, and legal liability for deceptive AI impersonation. A society that cannot agree on what is real cannot govern itself, full stop.

Third, keep humans accountable. "The AI decided" must never be an acceptable answer in medicine, law, hiring, or war. Responsibility cannot be delegated to a system that cannot be punished, shamed, or voted out. Every consequential AI deployment needs a named human who owns the outcome.

The optimists are right that Mass Intelligence could be history's greatest leveling force — a tutor for every child, a doctor's second opinion in every village. But leveling only happens if people remain capable of directing the tool rather than being directed by it.

The printing press gave everyone access to words; it still took centuries of literacy education before access became liberation. Intelligence, like print, is only as valuable as the minds prepared to use it. Our task is not to fear the billion new users of AI. It is to keep us worth listening to.
