### Surviving Mass Intelligence

When a billion people command intelligence on tap, scarcity flips. For all of human history, intelligence was rationed by birth, wealth, and geography. Now the scarce resource is not access to intelligence but the wisdom to use it. I have strong views on how we survive that.

First, we must stop confusing intelligence with judgment. Mass Intelligence gives everyone answers; it gives no one answers worth wanting. The differentiating human skill of this era is deciding which questions matter, what a good answer looks like, and when to distrust a fluent one. We should treat judgment the way past eras treated literacy: as the core of education, trained through argument, error, and the unglamorous work of checking things ourselves.

Second, we must defend effort. The gravest risk is not killer robots but atrophy — a billion people who outsource thinking until they can no longer think. I would deliberately keep friction where it builds people: students write before they consult the machine, doctors reason before they read the algorithm's guess. Convenience is a wonderful servant and a corrosive master. The generation that grows up never struggling to solve anything will not be smarter than us; it will be dependent on us, and then on the machines.

Third, institutions must scale faster than capabilities. We need provenance standards that tell us where a claim was made and by what, verification systems for a world of synthetic text, and liability rules that make deploying deception expensive. None of this requires predicting the future of AI; it requires admitting that trust is infrastructure, and we are building on none.

Fourth, the gains must be shared. If the productivity dividend of Mass Intelligence lands in a thousand bank accounts while wages stagnate, we will get Mass Inequality, and no society survives that peacefully. I would tax the windfall, fund public models, and treat broad access as a right, like schooling.

Finally, we must answer the meaning question honestly. People will not accept irrelevance, whatever the GDP says. The task is not to promise everyone a job machines can't do, but to build a culture where worth is not wage.

The question was never whether machines would become intelligent. It is whether we would. That is the work now.
