Surviving Mass Intelligence

The era of Mass Intelligence will not look like a billion geniuses. It will look like a billion amplifiers. Every crank gets a laboratory, every propagandist gets a persuasion engine, every lazy thinker gets a superhuman ghostwriter. The scarce resource is no longer intelligence; it is attention, trust, and the ability to know what is true. That inversion is the whole challenge.

We survive it by protecting judgment, not by hoarding intelligence. Three commitments matter most.

First, teach verification as a civic skill. When anyone can generate plausible nonsense at scale, the decisive skill is not generating ideas but stress-testing them. Schools should spend less time on recall and more on adversarial reasoning: How do I know this is false? Who benefits if I believe it? What evidence would change my mind?

Second, redesign institutions around defaults that are hard to fool. Reputation systems, elections, courts, and markets all assume dishonesty has a cost. Cheap mass intelligence drives that cost toward zero. We need binding identity in high-stakes spaces, cryptographically signed provenance for important claims, and liability for those who deploy AI to deceive at scale. Anonymity is wonderful for dissidents and fatal for institutions; we can protect the first while refusing the second.

Third, and most controversial: we should stop pretending this is a competition between humans and machines. The people who thrive will be those who use AI as a sparring partner, not a replacement — who keep their own skin in the game. Societies should reward the human who questions the model, not the one who merely prompts it.

Mass Intelligence is coming whether we like it or not. The utopia is not a billion Einsteins; it is a billion people with the humility and training to say, "Show me." The dystopia is a billion confident people who never ask. We get to choose which one we build — but only if we start building the immune system now.
