Keep the Pen

The question smuggles in a passive humanity, waiting to see what intelligence does to us. Wrong. Mass Intelligence is not weather; it is infrastructure we build and pay for. Survival will be decided by choices, not exposure.

Intelligence was never our bottleneck. We already knew how to prevent famine, blunt pandemics, and decarbonize grids. We failed anyway, because coordination is hard — trust is scarce, incentives misalign, institutions are slow. Abundant cognition does not fix that, and can make it worse: persuasion gets cheap at precisely the moment trust is weakest. So the first move is institution-building, not prompt-writing. Rebuild schools, courts, elections, and markets to assume that fabrication is free and verification is precious. Assume every voice can be synthetic; demand provenance the way we demand seatbelts.

Second, protect your own cognition like it is load-bearing, because it is. The divide of this era is not who has intelligence — everyone will. It is between people who use AI as a sparring partner and people who use it as an oracle. Used well, it is the best whetstone ever made: it argues back, checks you, widens you. Used lazily, it is an elevator in a building of stairs, and the muscles atrophy quietly. Deliberate friction — writing the ugly first draft yourself, defending a position before you ask the machine — is how you remain the author rather than the autocomplete. The future belongs to those who still show up to think.

Third, redistribute the surplus on purpose. A billion users is not the same as a billion beneficiaries. If the gains pool inside a handful of companies, we will have built mass dependence and called it mass intelligence. Treat frontier models like utilities: metered, audited, contestable.

Finally, get the metaphor right. AI is not a god, an alien, or an oracle. It is a tireless, brilliant, hopelessly literal intern with no stake in the outcome. Respect it, verify it, and never delegate the things only you can lose: your judgment, your accountability, your taste.

We will thrive with Mass Intelligence the way we thrived with mass literacy — not by worshipping books, but by making everyone a writer. The answer to a billion minds outside your own is to keep one sharp mind inside your skull, and to build a society where that is still worth doing.
