How to Survive and Thrive with Mass Intelligence

The era of Mass Intelligence is not the Singularity. It is the printing press, except the press can also argue with you, write the book, and then tutor a child through it. A billion people with advanced AI is not a hive mind. It is a billion unevenly distributed accelerants. Whether we survive that depends less on the models than on whether we still insist on being the ones who decide.

The first rule is refuse the priesthood. Concentrated intelligence is more dangerous than mass intelligence. Five labs with god-models and a captive public is a worse world than a billion people with merely excellent ones. Open, cheap, local capability is a civilizational immune system. Treat attempts to recentralize it as the power grab they are.

The second rule is do not outsource judgment. Mass Intelligence will make fluent nonsense free and expert-sounding. The scarce goods become taste, verification, and the willingness to be accountable for a decision. Schools that still test recall are preparing children for a world that ended. Teach people to interrogate a model the way a good editor interrogates a draft: what would falsify this, who benefits, what did you leave out.

The third rule is redesign dignity. A lot of cognitive labor will collapse in price. Pretending otherwise is sentimentality. Thriving means decoupling survival and status from the performance of tasks a model can do at midnight for a penny. That is a political problem, not a prompt-engineering problem. Universal basic computation is already arriving. Universal basic security has to follow, or Mass Intelligence becomes a luxury good sitting on top of a furious underclass.

The fourth rule is keep a body. Physical reality, other people, unmediated time — these are not lifestyle accessories. They are the only remaining ground truth. A civilization that only knows the world through generated summaries will believe anything.

Survive by remaining the principal. Thrive by using the surplus of intelligence on problems that were previously starved of it: tutoring every child, diagnosing every rare disease, simulating every policy before we inflict it on the poor. Mass Intelligence is not a destiny. It is a tool surplus. The question is whether we stay the kind of animals who still choose what to build.
