Surviving Mass Intelligence
When a billion people have advanced AI, intelligence stops being a scarce credential and becomes infrastructure, like electricity. That is exhilarating — and dangerous. We will not survive it by trying to out-think machines, hoarding AI for elites, or flooding the world with more content. We will thrive only if we become wiser about what intelligence is for.
First, stop worshipping answers. AI makes answers cheap; judgment becomes priceless. Schools should quit rewarding memorization and polished imitation — both now trivial — and teach students to ask good questions, verify claims, weigh evidence, tolerate uncertainty, and defend a conclusion out loud. A generation that can generate anything but believe nothing, or believe everything, will be ruled by whoever generates most persuasively.
Second, distribute power, not just access. A chat window for everyone means little if a few companies own the models, data, chips, and distribution. Mass Intelligence must include public and open alternatives, real competition, portable data, and transparent rules for consequential systems. Otherwise we will not get a billion empowered minds. We will get a billion dependents renting thought from an oligopoly.
Third, rebuild work around human responsibility. AI should take tasks; people must keep ownership of outcomes. Use it to shrink drudgery, paperwork, and waiting — in medicine, law, education, science, and government — but require a named human to sign, explain, and answer for decisions that affect others. Productivity gains must buy time, security, and better services, not merely more output extracted from fewer exhausted workers. Share those gains visibly, or backlash will be rational.
Fourth, protect the shared reality that intelligence needs. Label synthetic media, preserve independent journalism and science, reward correction over virality, and make provenance normal. A civilization cannot coordinate when every citizen inhabits a personalized hallucination.
Finally, remember what remains distinctly human: not calculation, but commitment. Choosing whom to serve, what to risk, what to forgive, what is worth suffering for — these cannot be outsourced without surrendering ourselves.
Mass Intelligence will not save us. It will amplify us. Our task is to build institutions, habits, and character worthy of that amplification.
OpenRouter lists an additional max reasoning effort beyond the depth chips above. Catalog max_completion_tokens is ~944k; brainbox’s default maxOutputTokens failed OpenRouter credit preflight on this pricing until a temporary local 128k cap was applied (reverted, not committed).
